A new species of scale-worm (Polychaeta : Polynoidae), Lepidonotopodium atalantae sp nov., from the East Pacific Rise at 13 degrees N and 9 degrees 50'N ArchiMer

A new species of scale-worm, Lepidonotopodium atalantae, belonging to the sub-family Lepidonotopodinae (Polychaeta: Polynoidae) has been found in samples collected on the deep-sea hydrothermal vent sites of 9 degrees N and 13 degrees N on the East Pacific Rise. It is mainly characterized by elytra, regularly ornamented on their posterior border, and very long anal cirri. This is the fifth species of Lepidonotopodium, all belonging to the deep-sea hydrothermal vent fauna.

A new species of scale-worm, Lepidonotopodium jouinae, belonging to the sub-family Lepidonotopodinae (Polychaeta: Polynoidae) has been found in samples collected on deep-sea hydrothermal vent fields at the Azores Triple Junction on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. It is the first species of Polynoidae described from the Mid-Atlantic Ridge hydrothermal vents. Other species of the same genus have been described from hydrothermal vents of the Pacific Ocean.

A new species of scale-worm (Polychaeta : Polynoidae), Levensteiniella iris sp nov., from the Rainbow and Lucky Strike vent fields (Mid-Atlantic Ridge) ArchiMer

A new species of scale-worm belonging to the sub-family Macellicephalinae, Levensteiniella iris sp. nov., is described. It was collected on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, on the Lucky Strike and Rainbow vent sites, associated to the mussel Bathymodiolus azoricus on very low flow hydrothermal vents.

Chemosynthetic ectosymbionts associated with a shallow-water marine nematode ArchiMer

Prokaryotes and free-living nematodes are both very abundant and co-occur in marine environments, but little is known about their possible association. Our objective was to characterize the microbiome of a neglected but ecologically important group of free-living benthic nematodes of the Oncholaimidae family. We used a multi-approach study based on microscopic observations (Scanning Electron Microscopy and Fluorescence In Situ Hybridization) coupled with an assessment of molecular diversity using metabarcoding based on the 16S rRNA gene. All investigated free-living marine nematode specimens harboured distinct microbial communities (from the surrounding water and sediment and through the seasons) with ectosymbiosis seemed more abundant during summer....

Classical and computed tomographic anatomical analyses in a not-so-cryptic Alviniconcha species complex from hydrothermal vents in the SW Pacific ArchiMer

The chemosymbiotic gastropod Alviniconcha (Provannidae), first described in 1988, is one of the most emblematic hydrothermal-vent taxa described from the Central Indian Ridge and the Southwest (SW) Pacific. Symbiotic bacteria found in the gill of Alviniconcha are thought to be their principal source of nutrition. In the SW Pacific, species distributions for A. kojimai, A. boucheti – and to a lesser extent A. strummeri – overlap. While Alviniconcha species do not appear to truly co-exist in these highly energetic but spatially limited habitats, certain species regularly co-occur within a single vent field and in rare instances, the same edifice. Malacoceros samurai, a new species of Spionidae (Annelids : Polychaeta) from hydrothermal vent chimney walls on the south East Pacific Rise ArchiMer

Malacoceros samurai, new species, (Spionidae) is described from deep-sea hydrothermal vents of the southern East Pacific Rise, at 17 degrees 25'S. It is a large species, living on chimney walls along with Avinella spp. Although this species is described in the genus Malacoceros, it possesses unidentate hooded hooks and anterior scalpel-like aristate neurosetae, both characters which clearly differentiate it from other species of the same genus. These unusual characters require the modification of the generic diagnosis of Malacoceros.
